Basic searching

You may do this lab in teams of up to three people.

Let's warm up your search engine skills. Find the following documents on the internet and download them. Hint: remember the "filetype" command in Google!

  1. The Army uses a book called the "Improvised Munitions Handbook" to train US and foreign soldiers how to build bombs. Download a copy of this book.
  2. The CIA has a manual for training people how to interview someone with a polygraph machine. Download a copy of this manual.
  3. MIT has a famous lockpicking club. They wrote a book for beginners to learn lockpicking. Find the name of this book, and download a copy.
Write the answers to the following questions on a sheet of paper. When you're done, show it to the TA to get checked off.
  1. In this section, we will do some searches about nuclear weapons.
    1. List the nine countries that currently have nuclear weapons.
    2. Only one country has ever developed nuclear weapons and then disarmed them. Which country was it?
    3. How many operational submarines does the US Navy currently have?
    4. The US Navy is planning on building 12 new submarines with a code name of SSBN-X. Their only purpose is to launch nuclear missiles. What is their official estimate of the cost?
      Hint: there's two estimates. A smaller number that just involves constructing the submarines, and a larger number that involves both constructing and operating them. You can find either one.
    5. What if the government decided to give out college scholarships to UC students instead of buying these 12 new submarines. How many scholarships could the government give out?
      Hint: to calculate this number, take the price of the nuclear submarines, and divide by the price of UC tuition.

  2. Now, we'll put your skills to a real test. You're going to spy on your instructor Mike Izbicki! You'll have to get creative with your search queries to find the answers!
    1. Where did Mike Izbicki graduate from college?
    2. Mike Izbicki got second place in a competition for brewing beer. What was the name of the beer?
    3. Mike Izbicki was involved in a court case. All court documents are public records. Find a pdf of the documents.
    4. Which 4 states has Mike Izbicki lived in?
    5. Mike Izbicki spends too much time on reddit. What is his user name?
